Preventing Procrastination

Sooner or later, we all give in to the urge to procrastinate, even when we know we face serious consequences. We think of many excuses to justify our procrastination, but whatever the reason, the result is the same - we delay doing what must be done.

I use two weapons to fight the battle against procrastination. One is to reward myself for good behavior whenever I have chores or a project to do. For instance, when I am completing daily tasks my break is always something I like - a good cup of coffee, a piece of chocolate or even a 15-minute snooze. I can keep going because I know my reward is coming. To keep myself motivated on larger projects, I give myself a bigger reward. Think about the things you enjoy and work them into your schedule as a reward for getting your work done. If you do, you’ll find yourself with less desire to put things off.

My second weapon is an idea I’ve mentioned before: break it down. So many activities seem overwhelming, but if you divide them up into small pieces they are easier to manage. I’ve cleared some of the worst messes by beginning with picking up five things. Any activity at all, no matter how little, makes you feel so much better, and often gives you the momentum to keep going.

The concepts of rewarding behavior and breaking down the task into small pieces are simple ideas but they are effective. Try them the next time you want to put things off, and you’ll be pleased with just how much you get done.
